
Col. Steven T. Barry, PhD, spent over thirty years in uniform and commanded at the platoon, company, battalion, and brigade levels. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served as an armor officer in a variety of leadership assignments in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East and led American soldiers in combat multiple times. Most significantly, he led a tank company to seize Baghdad in 2003 and a cavalry squadron in Mosul to eliminate Al Qaeda in Iraq in 2010. In addition to commanding the oldest Joint task force (Joint Task Force-Bravo) in U.S. history, he served on the Army Staff and the Joint Staff in the Pentagon. His last military assignment was as an associate professor at the National War College for five years where he taught strategic studies, warfighting, and military theory. His military decorations include the Ranger Tab, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Master Combat Action Badge, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star (multiple awards), and the Silver Star.
A recognized expert on military effectiveness and leadership development, Steve authored several national strategic documents and assessments while serving in the Pentagon. He also has conducted research for national security think tanks and lectured extensively on military leadership, strategy, and conflict. He holds a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in History from The Ohio State University. He has served as an assistant professor of history at West Point and a teaching fellow at Georgetown, and his published work includes Battalion Commanders at War and History of the Military Art Since 1914, 3rd edition.
Originally from Hamilton, New Jersey, Steve resides in Annandale, Virginia, with his children.
