Boston Campaign Leadership Experience

Charlestown, Massachusetts

On April 19, 1775, “the shot heard ’round the world” was fired in the sleepy village of Lexington, Massachusetts. No one knows if it was a British soldier or a Lexington minuteman who fired it, but one thing was clear to the British and American militia leaders who had come face to face that morning: there was no turning back. The battles fought that day at Lexington and Concord ignited a war that would last for eight years and secure American independence from Great Britain.

The British leaders demonstrated an overarching confirmation bias and a collective inability to recognize the depth of their opponents’ will and the strength of their resistance. The Americans, in stark contrast, were agile and able to mitigate the exposure posed by their weaknesses. This difference is evident when comparing the decisions of the royally appointed British leaders to those of their American counterparts who were chosen by consensus and led by influence instead of authority.
