After six costly years of war, the struggle for American independence reached its climax at Yorktown, Virginia, in September 1781. Exhausted from a relentless southern campaign punctuated by miscalculations, British General Cornwallis led his army down the Virginia peninsula to the port at Yorktown to await reinforcements with the hopes of crushing the Patriot rebellion. It was a fateful mistake. Sensing opportunity, a combined force of American and French troops led by General George Washington marched to Virginia, and together with the French navy, trapped Cornwallis and forced his surrender.
