The Ottoman Empire’s last major campaign aimed at the conquest of Europe and Christendom was embodied in the Great Siege of Malta, which lasted from mid-May through mid-September 1565. As a strategically located island in the east–west shipping lanes of the Mediterranean Sea, Malta had an ease of access to the ports of Italy, France, and Spain that the Turks wanted to control. Malta was seen as the gateway to Europe and to the Holy See of the Catholic Church, the sworn mortal enemy of Islam. The story of how a small international coalition of forces from a few Christian countries, aided by unarmed militia from the Island of Malta, held off the largest armada assembled since antiquity is truly the stuff of legend, and the principal characters in the story embody powerfully instructive examples and lessons of leadership relevant to the ever-changing and fast-paced business world of today.
